Laser Eye Surgery FAQ - What is Laser Eye Surgery?

Dr. Frank Thomnpson asked:

As with any other procedure, it is important to have as much information as possible regarding laser eye surgery. You might have questions you want to ask your doctor to give you piece of mind as well as to help you make more informed decisions. Common questions might include what exactly it is, what goes on before, during and after surgery, how to tell if it is indeed an option for you, etc. The following are some of the most common questions.

First of all, what is laser eye surgery? This is the term that refers to the procedure that corrects visual disorders such as myopia or nearsightedness, hyperopia or farsightedness and astigmatism. Laser eye surgeries may permanently terminate the need for glasses or contact lenses, thus giving the patient a more acute sense of freedom and visual acuity.

How exactly does the laser correct the vision problems? Through a laser vision apparatus and control method, short beams of invisible lasers take out minute tissue samples from the cornea to properly align the curvature. The tissue is so miniscule that it’s actually less thick than a strand of human hair. By removing this tissue, the retina is able to focus on the images better and so the images become clearer.

What are the types? There are generally two types: PRK or photorefractive keratectomy and Lasik or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. Under these umbrella terms, several other procedures are categorized. PRK is a procedure that uses an excimer laser that removes the outer layer of the cornea, which is then reshaped to correct the eye disorder. Lasik is another refractive procedure that uses a surgical instrument to create a flap under the cornea. This flap is then lifted after which the laser reshapes the cornea.

Who are good candidates for laser eye surgery? People over 21 years of age are good candidates for laser eye surgery. They must not have severe eye disorders such as glaucoma. A visit to an eye specialist can help the patient determine if this is the best way to correct your myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.

How safe is the procedure? People all over the world have had laser vision correction surgery successfully performed on them. Laser surgery is very safe, takes less than ten minutes on the whole and patients may expect full recovery in a matter of days.

How much is laser eye surgery? The usual cost for it is about $1,500 dollars per eye. This covers pre-operative and post-operative visits as well.

Eye Body Language - Detecting Lies By Reading Eye Body Language

Michael Lee asked:

Want to know how to detect lies by reading eye body language? In this article, I’ll reveal some extraordinary tips on how to catch a liar simply by interpreting the body language signs given by the eyes.

Reading eye body language may not be 100% accurate all the time. But by combining your interpretation of other nonverbal signals with their eye movements, you’ll come up with reliable data supporting your assertions.

When a person avoids making eye contact, he may be lying. However, some liars deliberately look you straight in the eye and maintain it because they don’t want to be seen as “hiding something.”

When a person is lying, he may be forcing himself to smile. A forced smile involves movement of the mouth only. A natural smile involves movement of the cheeks, eyes, nose and forehead. In a genuine smile, the eyes are smaller and squinted.

Here’s a rather unique technique to detect lies by reading eye body language.

If you ask a question to a right-handed person, and he looks to the left in an upward direction, that means he is thinking or “visually constructing” an image in his mind. If he looks to the right in an upward direction, he is recalling or “visually remembering” something that actually happened.

So let’s say you ask him, “Where were you when the child fell down?” If he looks up to the left, he might be making up a story to cover the real incident. If he looks up to the right, he might be recalling what actually happened (in reality).

This method may help you determine if you want to accept their explanation or not, while also taking into account other factors.

Note that the meaning of these eye directions would have the reverse interpretation for a left-handed person.

Remember also that you should not solely rely on reading eye body language to detect lies. It’s better if you combine it with your assessment of other body language signals for a more accurate interpretation.

How To Apply Eye Lash Extensions

Nita Kahlon asked:

The latest craze amongst celebrities is eye lash extensions. When done professionally eye lash extensions give you long lushes, beautiful lashes that look natural. Having beautiful lashes means you do not have to put on a lot of make-up to look great.

Eyelash extensions are a great way to enhance your eyes and your face. The longer and fuller your lashes are the more dramatic they look which in turn draws attention to your eyes. Eyelash extensions give you the impact look you are after.

Do It Yourself?

You have two ways to go when deciding to apply eye lash extensions. There is the do-it-yourself kit or the professional method. Both are good but the one you choose will depend on your budget and how confident you are at applying your own lashes.

It may be a good idea to have your first eye lash extensions applied by a professional so you can look and learn. Also if you have any burning questions they can be answered here. However, if you are confident in your own ability than there is no reason why you can’t apply the lashes yourself but make sure you follow the instructions very carefully.

What are they made of?

Eye lash extensions can be made up of one of two different types of material. The more expensive and natural looking extensions are made up of real human hair.

The cheaper option and by no means inferior is lashes made up of synthetic products. There are different types of synthetic lashes and as the saying goes, ‘you get what you pay for’. Look for a good quality product not the cheapest one you can find.

Most salons nowadays cater for the full beauty treatment from nails to hair to eyes. It is always a good idea to talk to your salon and see if they have a professional who can apply the lashes.

Who Will Do A Good Job?

If the salon has a professional who can provide the service find out which, eye lash extensions they have experience in. If they do not have a qualified eye lash extension technician they may be able to recommend someone. Either way find out how long they have been providing the service for and their level of experience in terms of the products they have worked with.

If you decide on a professional to apply your lashes the whole procedure can take anywhere between 1- 2hrs, it is painless and simple. Whilst the extensions are being applied ask all the questions you want so next time you can do it yourself.

If on the other hand you have decided to apply the lashes yourself than there is no need to panic as most kits comes with full instructions.

The most important part of applying the lashes yourself is applying the adhesive evenly so there are no clumping or uneven looking lashes. One of the best ways to apply the adhesive is to place some on a card and sweep the eyelash through to get an even coating.

Eyelash extensions are the latest craze made famous by the celebs. If applied correctly by a professional or yourself, you can have beautiful lashes for up to two months. These will give you the desired look of longer fuller lashes that draws people’s attention to you and ladies isn’t that what we want? to be worshiped

Puffy Eyes - Instant Relief Treatments & Ways to Prevent Eye Puffiness

Filed under: Health And Fitness — Tags: , — admin @ 6:34 am
Kacy Carr asked:

Do you find your eyes puff up regular or show deep coiled black circles often? Do the bags under your eyes sag heavily? If you are embarrassed over your puffy eyes then you are not to worry because there are treatments to reduce eye puffiness. If we can get to the bottom of why puffy eyes have occurred then there is every possibility of curing the problem.

We associate eye puffiness to lack of sleep. Should this not be the case in your case after catching up with sleepy eye, then puffiness may be caused by other of which will need to be determined by your doctor. Mild or severe puffiness can happen through numerous factors. Most primary are allergies and skin disorders. Eyes can puff up and swell if fluid settles round them or through climate change and hormone levels. This condition is also marked down as heredity. Swollen eyes are not normally seen as a symptom of seriousness. Nevertheless not to be ignored either. How to reduce and treat puffy eyes is a question we answer with good news by clarifying there are ways to treat and prevent puffiness.

You need to elevate the head at every possibly moment when resting or sleeping. Propping the head up will control extra fluids from filling around the eyes. For instant relief apply a cold water compress to the skin just under the eye to take swelling down. Cucumber potato or apple slices placed over the eyes will refresh, reduce and soothe tired eyes. Chilled gel masks or used moist tea bags do the same. Cotton wool pads soaked in cold water or milk and applied for 10 to 15 minutes works wonders.

Skin that envelops the eye is sensitive so take care when treating them and with what you treat the eyes with. Does haemorrhoid cream reduce puffiness? As we speak we have no true proof that it does and with no clinical evidence to prove otherwise you should avoid using haemorrhoid cream unless suggested by your GP. The cream is known to cause irritation and dryness leading to inflammation. If you have tried different solutions to help reduce puffiness and no sign of any swelling going down see your doctor. Your GP can from examination eliminate other possible causes like kidney or thyroid issues. Puffiness can also derive as a side effect (allergic reaction.)

If you think you look a sight for sore eyes read on.

If the body begins to dehydrate it starts to retain water which can lead to puffy eyes. Drink plenty of water, not only is this good for controlling puffiness it is good for your overall health in general.

Sleep on your back if possible because this helps circulation. Sleeping on your tummy has the reverse affect allowing fluid to flood the eyes. Leaving make-up on overnight is unhealthy and can cause irritation. Alcohol and salty foods may increase fluid retention which ultimately can lead to puffy eyes.

It is known that some women retain water prior to their period, and certain women this shows around the eyelids. Maintain a good hormonal balance to help prevent this from happening. Add fruit and vegetables to your daily menu.

As with the ageing process skin loses elasticity and this can give cause for the eyes to swell. It is imperative to use a quality sunscreen block when out in the midday sun to protect the eyes from damaging sun ray’s. Keep your diet rich in antioxidants and if this is not possible take supplements.

Moisturize the skin round the eyes to stop the skin drying up.

Dull corneas are a sign of severe vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A is a crucial element of importance for night vision. A well balanced daily diet of fresh fruit vegetables and certain nuts is helpful.

One reason for eye strain is poor lighting while reading or sewing. Doing these things under dim lighting causes the eyes to weary and this can be avoided by using proper lighting. By making a few minor adjustments to how you do things will help you avoid eye strain. Change the angle at which you hold a paper or book while reading. Closeness can strain the eyes. Be careful of long hours sitting in front of the television or computer, have a break. If you have an eye concern then consult an optician.

There is no special way to completely relax the eyes and the surrounding muscles other than to just close them.

Treat dark circles with a mixture of pulpy tomato (quarter) turmeric powder, lemon juice and gram flour. Apply over darkened skin and rinse off once dried.

Look after your eyes and they will look after you so you may see things more clearly

Dog Eye Infections - Four Common Canine Eye Infections

D Swain asked:

Like us, there are many things that can go wrong with your dog’s eyes. Some of the most common dog eye infections include conjunctivitis, uveitis, and scleritis. Treatment can be as simple as application of eye drops, or as serious as emergency surgery. This article will take a look a some of the most common canine eye infections.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a condition that occurs when the mucous membranes of the eye become inflamed. You may know of this condition as “pink eye”, as it occurs commonly in humans too. Conjunctivitis in dogs is usually the result of a viral or bacterial infection. However, allergies and ticks can also be causes. Your dog will have a yellow or clear discharge coming from his eyes. You will need to keep the area around the eyes clean and give him the prescribed medication.

Uveitis

One of the next common dog eye infections is uveitis, a condition which can have lasting negative effects on vision. It is characterized by the inflammation of the uveal tract, which surrounds most of the eye. Dogs with uveitis show symptoms such as light sensitivity, excessive tear production, and eyelid spasms. Uveitis can be secondary to other diseases affecting your dog. Eye ointment or oral medications will help reduce inflammation and pain. In some cases, antibiotics or anti-fungal medications may be prescribed. In severe cases, the eye will have to be removed surgically.

Scleritis

Scleritis is also one of the common canine eye infections. This disease causes inflammation of the sclera, the white outer coating that enclosed the eyeball. It usually affects only one eye at a time. Most cases of scleritis occur because of a disease caused by parasites such as Lyme disease or toxoplasmosis. Dogs with scleritis are usually given steroids to treat the condition.

Cherry Eye

One of the final common dog eye infections is cherry eye. This condition results when the gland of the third eyelid protrudes and proceeds to become inflamed. It is usually a problem with younger dogs. In order to treat cherry eye, the gland will have to be replaced surgically.

Eye Herpes - Redness And Slight Pain In Your Eye? You May Have Eye Herpes!

Daniel Herman asked:

Not many people know this but it is actually possible for the herpes virus to spread to the carriers eyes, when this happens it is known as ocular herpes, or eye herpes in some circles. This form of herpes is a lot rarer than other types such as or oral and ******* herpes.

This form of herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (also known as HSV-1 for short), this is the same virus that causes oral herpes (i.e. cold sores). This form of herpes has been given the nickname of the cold sore of the eye.

There are approximately 50,000 new cases of ocular herpes a year in America. Around half a million Americans have had some form of eye herpes.

The most common cause of ocular herpes is the reactivation of the once dormant virus which had been hibernating in the ****** nerves of the carrier. In most cases the dormant virus stays inactive, however for some unknown reason it may become active again and spread to the ocular nerves.

Fortunately ocular herpes is harmless in most cases, however its symptoms can cause discomfort, these include sensitivity to light, redness and slight pain. The herpes virus usually only affects the top layer of the cornea, and heals without scarring.

In a severe case of eye herpes the infection affects the deeper layers of the cornea, this is when it is likely to do lasting damage. Vision loss may occur and in the worst case scenario a carrier may go blind permanently. The severity of the damage that occurs all depends on how deep the virus reaches into the cornea. It is also possible for the herpes virus to infect the inside of the eye and the retina, although this is not as common. When herpes infects the inside of the eye it is known as herpes uveitis, when it affects the retina it is known herpes retinitis, both of these are very severe types of ocular herpes.

There are various treatment options for people with ocular herpes, and the method used depends on the severity of the outbreak. If the individual suffers from a minor case then a doctor may just prescribe anti viral eye drops - these actually fight the virus. Other forms of treatment involve the doctor carefully wiping away the infected cells of the cornea. Unfortunately not everyone responds well to the treatment and some people have prolonged scarring which leads to permanent vision loss.

If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned in this article then you are strongly advised to seek medical help, a doctor can give you a proper diagnosis. If it does turn out to be eye herpes the doctor can then recommend the best form of treatment to fight this infection.

Oh My Eyes Hurt From Chronic Dry Eyes

Allan Wilson asked:

Chronic dry eye problem is caused, when tears produced by the eyes are insufficient to moisturize and protect the eyes. There are some environmental factors, which are responsible for chronic dry eyes problems such as weather, pollution and dust. When people suffer from chronic dry eyes problems, they experience problems such as continuous irritation in eyes, inflammation and a feeling of pricking in eyes.

Severe dry eyes problem is one of the most frequent difficulties faced by many people who are working on a computer. The most common symptoms of this problem is burning , itching, irritation , redness, blurred vision that improves with blinking , excessive tearing and increasing discomfort after periods of reading , watching TV, or working on a computer.

There are some symptoms, which are helpful to determine if a person is suffering from this complaint such as feeling unpleasantness in the eyes , feeling of presence of foreign object in the eyes, or feeling redness and excessive tearing are the most common reasons that helps a person to determine if he is suffering from chronic dry eyes.

Some people may feel continuous pain in their eyes and other similar discomfort symptoms. These are the most common chronic eye symptoms. Sometimes due to lack of tear production people feel strain in their eyes. This is also a common symptom of dry eyes.

There are treatments and guidelines, which help people to get relief from dry eye such as using watery treatments, artificial tears and other dry eye solutions. It is important to understand that proper eye care for this ailment is little different from other eye treatments many people may feel relief after using artificial tears on regular basis. Some of the treatments are watery and alleviate the symptoms temporary. For others preservative free tears are recommended because they are most gentle and have fewer additives that would potentially irritate. It has been recommended by doctors not to use products that whiten eyes because they do not have sufficient lubricating qualities and they can make problem even more severe.

Consistent eye care is essential to get relief from dry eyes; this may improve irritation from sore eyes. Blinking eyes frequently may help to care for the eyes when a person is reading or watching television. It is not recommended by eye physician to rub itched eyes because it only worsens the irritation.

Sudden Blurred Vision - Do I Need Lasik Laser Eye Surgery?

Dr. Frank Thomnpson asked:

Sudden blurred vision, especially when accompanied by other factors, can be a symptom of various diseases and disorders. The following are some of the diseases and disorders associated with having sudden blurred vision.

Glaucoma: Glaucoma is often touted as the silent thief because you may have been losing your eyesight without you knowing it. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of loss of vision. Symptoms may include sudden blurred vision, accompanied by nausea or vomiting, eye redness, severe eye pain, loss of peripheral vision and seeing halos around lights. A common type of glaucoma is primary open-angle glaucoma. This forms gradually and does not give warning signs so often enough, many people do not become aware of their eye problem until it is too late. Glaucoma is actually a group of diseases, the most common feature of which is damage to the optic nerve and a sensation of pressure on your eyeballs.

When it is accompanied by stringy or spotty bits in your vision, sudden flashes of light and the sensation that a curtain or shadow is being lowered onto your field of vision, you may be experiencing retinal detachment. Retinal detachment should be taken care of immediately. It is a medical emergency and time is of the essence. If the detached retina is not surgically put back into place, the patient may suffer permanent loss of vision. Unlike glaucoma though, retinal detachment gives out warning signs so you may be able to have yourself diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

You may be suffering from a stroke if you are experiencing sudden blurred vision with loss of peripheral vision, sudden partial or total vision loss or double vision. Stroke is the third-leading cause of death in the United States. It is a medical emergency so the immediate treatment of stroke can spell the difference between life and death. Treating stroke early can also spell the difference between full recovery and a lifetime of paralysis or disability. Stroke happens when the brain tissue is deprived of oxygen and nutrients. This occurs when the supply of blood to the brain is reduced or severely interrupted.

Some other causes of it are diabetes, need for corrective eye surgery and hypertension. The less common of cause of sudden blurred vision might also be macular degeneration and migraine. Migraines can last up to 45 minutes before it subsides. In any case, if you experience this, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Color Contact Lenses - Change Your Eye Color in the Blink of an Eye

Tanya Turner asked:

Did you ever wish that you had a different eye color? Or maybe you just want to do something a bit crazy and have different color eyes for each party? Color contacts can do wonders for your appearance, but only if you select the right type and color. Learn how to get the best out of your color lenses, what your options are and what to consider when selecting color contacts.

Do color lenses really change your eye color and look natural?

This is a question that worries most people who want to try color contacts for the first time. After all, you want people to think “what gorgeous eyes she has” not “what nice contact lenses she wears”.

Color lens manufacturers are aware of the issue and try to make color contacts look vivid, yet natural. There is a lot of sophisticated technology involved in the brand name color contacts like Acuvue 2 Colors or Freshlook. The lens isn’t just solid color, it has a pattern similar to the pattern of a human eye. Also the color isn’t consistent throughout the lens, just like in most people eyes. See color contact lens comparison

Color lens choices for light eyes

Depending on the effect you want to create, people with light eyes can wear enhancement or opaque color contacts.
If you just want to enhance your natural color, half transparent, enhancement lenses would be great for you. The best choices are:

Acuvue 2 Colors Enhancers - to brighten your eyes.
Freshlook Radiance - lenses with an illuminating effect that enhances your color and makes your eyes appear sparkly.
Freshlook Dimensions - unique lens design makes your eyes appear not only brighter but also creates the impression of depth and dimension. If you feel adventurous and want a dramatic change, go for opaque lenses:
Acuvue 2 Colors opaques
Freshlook Colorblends

If it is your first time with color contact lenses and you aren’t sure what effect you want, start with enhancement lenses. This way your friends will notice that you look more appealing, but they probably won’t notice what it is about you that attracts their attention.

Color contact lenses for dark eyes

If you have very dark eyes and tried color contact lenses a few years ago, you probably were not very impressed with the effect. Contacts of the previous generation didn’t look quite right. However, recently developed color lenses like Freshlook Colorblends can do wonders for dark eyes.

One thing to remember, however, is that enhancers don’t work on brown eyes, so your only choice is opaque contact lenses. Acuvue 2 Colors opaques and Freshlook Colorblends work best for dark eyes.

Also you should be careful, when selecting the color. It should be a color that would look right with your skin and hair. See color contact lens chart with suggestions and photos.

If you just want to make your eyes seem brighter and more vivid, without changing their color, go for brown or hazel color lenses. This way your eyes won’t look a different color, but people will notice that they are bright and lively.

Opaque color contacts work very well. The only thing they can’t do for you is to make your eyes light. Blue, green and aqua opaque contacts create a deep, vivid color, which suits people who have naturally brown eyes.

Do color contacts come with corrective powers?

Acuvue 2 Colors and all Freshlook collections come with visual correction powers as well as in plano (no correction). Additionally, Freshlook Colorblends is the only color lens that comes in toric, so it is suitable for people with astigmatism.

So which is better: Acuvue 2 Colors or Freshlook?

There is no single answer to this question. Both brands of lens are very comfortable to wear and create a great look. The only difference is in the colors. On the same person, blue from Acuvue would look very different from Freshlook blue. It really depends on your eyes and face, and it’s almost impossible to predict the result until you wear your color contacts.

Don’t pay to much attention to how the lens looks in the picture, because on you it will probably look different. This happens mostly with enhancer lenses - blue enhancers over blue eyes look very different from enhancers over gray eyes. Opaque color contact lenses also can look very different on different people; this is not due to your natural eye color, but because of eye shape, skin and hair types.

When you narrow your choice to one color, I would recommend asking your doctor for two prescriptions: one for Acuvue 2 Colors and another for Freshlook. Then order both. They cost pretty much the same, so you would spend no more than if you were to order 2 boxes of each.

Then, after wearing your new color contacts for a while, you can decide for yourself, which looks better.

Also, doctors usually give you free trial color contacts. You can’t really wear them in public because trial lenses have the word “test” imprinted on them, but it gives you a fair idea about the color. Ask for two free pairs, one from Freshlook and one from Acuvue, and see which looks best.

As far as the price is concerned, Freshlook and Acuvue 2 Colors cost about the same for a 6-lens box. However, all Freshlook lenses are monthly disposable, while Acuvue 2 Colors is a 2-week disposable contacts lens. So it turns out that Freshlook is twice cheaper.

If you were thinking of giving yourself a little treat, getting color contacts would not disappoint you. And now when you know what would work best for you, you can make your choice with confidence.

Happy changing!
